New Boker Red Injun
So, I bit the bullet and ended up bidding on this Boker Red Injun #101 off ebay. I originally was going to go for the Henckels, and if I had lost the bid then I would have. But as I wanted both razors equally, and this one was ending soonest. I decided to go for it. That way if I lost, I could still go for the Henckels.
I know I spent entirely too much on it, but I had never done any actual bidding on e-bay, and... well... I got a little excited and lost track of the moment. It is all one big blur now. I just remember duking it out with this guy for the last 5 minutes of the auction. Before I knew it I was at $123 for the stinkin thing. It is an MIB razor, never been opened. I keep telling my self that this fact made it ok to pay that much, but I am probably kidding my self. I probably wont be paying that much for a razor again anytime soon. No more razors till mid summer! I have three now, and I have only been at this a month now!
Anyway, my question is this. It is, for all intensive purposes, still new, and so I am assuming that it still has a factory edge on it. I was wondering if this would be easy enough for me to get shave ready on my hone, or if I should consider sending it off to Lynn or one you other honemeisters.
I have a pasted paddle and a norton coming in this week, ( I seriously have spent entirely too much money already). I will have all the needed equipment to get this baby shave ready. BUT! I was also thinking it would be nice to have it sent off to one of you guys so that I would get what I know to be a perfectly honed razor. I could then use this as a sort of benchmark for my future honing attempts.
Other than the fact that I spent way too much on this, what are the thoughts about this? I have attached some razor porn for you all bellow. And if one of you guys was the other bidder, I am sorry.
Matt
P.S. The second picture is of a different razor, but same model.

Hi Matt,
For what it's worth I think we all fall into that trap when we start out of getting caught up in the moment on ebay and before you know it wham-mo, you've over bid on something. And that also goes with all the other shaving paraphernalia that we all must have NOW, AND NOT JUST ONE TYPE OR SIZE OR COLOUR
Getting back to your Red Injun, I also bought one of these from the same seller and I chose to send mine to Lynn first for honing so as like what you said I could use that as a benchmark against anything else I hone myself.
The razor itself is "beautiful" if thats the right word, and I thought seeing as it's NOS it would look better if Lynn honed it rather than me doing it and ballsing it up. By the way Lynn bought one of these razors also. So for the extra $20 for honing, it was worth it for me.
Regards
John

I bid on that a couple days ago and set up a snipe for it today.
It went to more than I was willing to pay tho, I was hoping it would pass under the radar with the one that went the other day.

That's why I snipe. I just can't allow myself to get into bid wars.
To get to your question, it depends. I probably think you should send it out based on two things. First, I'm assuming you have never gotten a blade shave ready (as you do not have a Norton yet); Second, you spent quite a bit on it, and it would be a shame to ruin a NOS razor that you wanted so badly.
Despite the fact that its a NOS razor the edge might need to be taken to the Norton b/c it is an old blade. If it only needs some finishing work maybe you can get it done on your paddle though.
I would suggest getting a cheap razor and using it to practice honing before you use expensive blades.

Well, my Dovo came shave ready from Tony, so I have had that experience. I have a restoration project going. I am planning on honing it this weekend. I am leaning towards sending it off to Lynn. I guess I will see how well the honing this weekend goes, and the figure whether I will send it off or not. Any thoughts Lynn?

Thanked: 0Matt, ive been scouring ebay for a little more then a week now and prolly spent near 200$, i have a shitload of razors in the mail now actually received one today but none as nice as the one you got. 123$ is alot but when you consider what you got and the TRIP it'll be to open i sure its money well spent. Personally i would prolly ship it to lynn, since i would prolly be so nervous about ruining it on the hone that i prolly couldnt keep my hand from shaking ....heck im not even sure i could shave with it properly. Anyway, great pick up, i hope it ships fast cause your gonna be stalking the mail till it does. i actually cornered my mailman today as i was going to the bank to clear some space on my credit card. He saw me looking at him i think i freak him out, then i went to see him and he infact and my geneva co. attached to the handle of his little pull cart. It was the first to arrive of the many razors ive picked up on ebay and i tell you its a trip. Cleaned it up this afternoon, keened it up sweet little shaver.

Yeah, I will probably ship it off to Lynn then. Basically, I will get it, open it, and then promptly take it to the post office. I will be PMing you when I get it, Lynn.

Beautiful razor!!!!!!!!
most new good quality razors start at about $100.00 and just keep going up from that point. You did good!!!
I have two of these they're good shavers!!
recently I got an unopened w&b wedge. at least 100 years old. all I did was strop on plain linen and then plain leather. it shaved beautifully!!Point being try stropping and shaving first and then if need be you can send it to someone for honing.
Mark
P S It's not intensive purposes
it's intents and purposes

Heh I was sitting watching that one too, I decided not to put a bid in right at the end as I'm looking for restoration projects these days.
Congratulations, I'm glad an SRP member won it.
