As I'm new to this I can only wonder. I assumed this was "normal". I was under the impression that the wear was part of the process for blades that aren't a hollow. I wil not name names here. I don't think that is fair to them. I will consult them in private. Any info on what "should have been done" would be greatly appreciated to enable me to clearly explain to the vendor my conserns. Thanks

I don't believe it's your responsibility -- neither in part, nor in whole -- to "explain [anything] to the vendor"; it is painfully obvious that your heirloom razor was not "properly honed"... not by him, her, or them. As for not naming names, I shudder to think about the next SRP member who entrusts a razor -- heirloom, or otherwise -- to his, hers, or their hands, for honing... and I suggest that protecting the many takes precedence over protecting that individual.
You can have everything, and still not have enough.
I'd give it all up, for just a little more.

Nothing will change the fact now that it's done. All I can do is be happy I still have it and that it shaves nicely. It doesn't change the disappointment I feel, but it will allow me to move on and continue to hopefully have better experiences. Thanks to all who shared their opinions.

It is difficult for me to imagine what condition of the razor would have made this necessary. My standard practice on a "wedge" ( slightly hollow ground) is to use multiple layers of tape (3) on the spine to avoid just this sort of result.

Id cry if I recieved a family heirloom back from a honer looking like that, I cant imagine why it needed that much metal removed unless it had a major nick, frown, etc, and even then just wow.... that could easily have been prevented with simple masking tape...that razor started out with nearly no hone wear best I can tell. My condolences, that razor was a beauty.

Nope with tape like Randy already mentioned that bevel would have been quick small and fast..

It also would have been way more even, what took time was to grind away all the fine English steel

I can't say whether a proper light hand would have helped or not, that point of knowing is long past

Yeah meant it got 8 hours of damage over the tape option....leaves a pit in your stomach thinking about it....like when I chipped that blade a while back...
