    Default Skyfall Straight Razor

I know Skyfall came out in 2012, but I am watching it now for the first time and just saw the scene where 007 gets a shave with a straight. Then I did a quick google search out of curiosity and found this.

'Skyfall' shave scene 'increases cut-throat razor sales by 405%' - Fun News - Digital Spy

I wasn't surprised that it caused an upswing in sales, I was blown away by how big it was though!

    Just wanted to share

I haven't seen the movie yet. Though my dad seems to have thought it was what peaked my interest in straights; I argue it's the Dollar Shave Club commercial.

The downside to having a 2 y/o is that Dora gets more airtime than James Bond.

I saw Skyfall and loved it. But the shaving scene didn't even register with me until after I read about its impact on straight shaving!

Not that it's all bad, but it's kind of a sad statement that people are so susceptible to suggestion. I remember how Dalmatian dog sales (and Humane Society drop offs ) went through the roof after Disney's live action 101 Dalmatians came out. I wrote that phenomenon off, figuring "that's just kids", but that's clearly not the case.

It all goes to show why product placement is so important and lucrative.

I often wonder about the validity of these so-called polls, especially after some of the cosmetics firms revealed how big a sample they questioned. Less than a hundred in most cases, and one, I think, was 13 people! How can you draw any meaningful conclusion from that?

To do a creditable job you would have to analyse trends on all the auctions, both live and online, antique and bric-a-brac shops and fire off queries to all the companies that still make razors today, and that's just the tip of the ice berg.

The article qualifies its findings by saying sales are up by 'apparently' 405%, then goes to blow it by mentioning just one retailer - Shaving Shack. That tells me more about the relationship between Shaving Shack and Digital Spy then it does about the sale of razors.

No, afraid I don't believe it.

    Regards,
    Neil

I admit the media(magazine articles, Skyfall, etc) did add to my interest in straight and DE razors. However, the high price of cartridges razors and concern for the environment were what led me to straight shaving.

They did make a big fuss about the shaving scene in the 2012 remake of Anna Karenina with Matthew MacFayden - it was on all the blogs, clips, stills, etc. No-one ever reported an upswing in straight-razor sales though.

Which was a shame for me - the studio props buyer used one of my oldies for the razor, along with some cased sets, paddle strops and shaving mugs to decorate the barbours parlour with - even sent a courier round to pick it up and drop it off, as well as paying handsomely for the use of the items.

According to a report from a friend of mine who runs a shaving products shop, Dovo production is sold out till end of 2015, he could hardly get a few.

I told my wife that Skyfall is the reason I bought all those customs and large straight razors. When I pull out a shiny 10/8 to shave with in the morning, she looks at me skeptically, that is, until I tell her "the name's Bond, James Bond". That solves the problem right there. OK, it doesn't, but it does make me feel like a more empowered shaver.

Come to think of it, the wife acts sililarly when I bring up razors or Bond...lots of eye-rolling.

I heard that their stocks were low, but it had something to do with a key worker dying, at least that's what I remember, might be wrong.
