Thanked: 0Long Term Storage of Razors...Straight and Japanese
I have a few razors that I would like just to put up for the future and not have to worry about them rusting and having to check on them except rarely. I am wondering what the best preparation would be. I have some stuff that I have purchased...."Tuf Glide " protectant, "Renaissance Wax", and "Rust Blocker Strips". Supposedly the Tuf Glide is an oil free, micro bonding, dry lubricant, that stops rust from starting.....the wax is what museums use (so they say) and doesn't have any acids and will prevent rust......finally the "Bullfrog" rust blocker strips are supposed to stop rust in any enclosed space where there is metal for a full year. I don't know exactly how this works. I would appreciate any advice on how to proceed or if there are better alternatives. I was wondering if the razor should be unwrapped from the paper so it could get the benefit of the rust blocker. Any ideas?

Intriguing thread and I look forward to knowledgeable comments. What and why are your razors being "put up"?

I have a number of razors that I go from six months to a year without using. They reside in a drawer in the open air in an air conditioned room in my finished basement. I have never applied anything to the blades, have seen no rust, and they are shave ready even after not being stropped for a year or more.

Thanked: 4828I use a coating of ren-wax, a thin layer of grease, and then wrap it in U-Line anti corrosion paper. I live in the boreal rain forest on an island, everything rusts here. I think a big chunk of this is going to depend on the rest of your environment. I'm sure the guys living in the arid areas won't have to work so hard at preservation.

Thanked: 603+1 to Tuf-Glide. Additionally, I toss a couple of desiccant packets into whatever I store razors in (desiccant packets are ubiquitous -- you find them inside most every packaged item -- and they're long-lived and reusable).
You can have everything, and still not have enough.
I'd give it all up, for just a little more.

I go with ace. Storing a dry razor in a dry place is sufficient. It can't hurt to apply alittle oil, but just a thin coat. I'm not sure if you'll need the "fancy stuff" you've mentioned. It doesn't hurt to give your stored razors a look over every once and a while.
Best Wishes,

In addition to Ren Wax, or even instead of it, I recommend R.I.G. Universal Gun Grease. I've used this stuff for 40 years on firearms, knives and razors, and never had a speck of rust on anything treated with same no matter how long it was stored. Just to 'gild the lilly' I use an Outer's Silicone Gun Cloth to spread it around after applying the R.I.G. with a Q-tip. The cloth becomes impregnated with the stuff, in addition to the silicone, and it is impenetrable IME.

I have used R.I.G for many years also. never any rust. A friend of mine who owns a gun shop showed me years ago to take an old bath cloth and use a good gun oil then spread R.I.G over it and work it in. I use one of these for my firearms and another for my razors I leave out of the safe. the ones in the safe I coat with RIG and wrap in wax paper from the kitchen and put back in the original coffin for storage. seams to work rather well.

Thanked: 13249Just for info here guys:
Many of the light colored Celluloid scales will absorb color during long term storage, so you want to be a little careful with any Products you put on the steel, I doubt many have been tested with Celluloid etc: ..
The VCI paper and Nothing else is what I have switched to for actual Long Term (1 Year +) storage so far the longest stored that way is 3+ years and at last check there are no issues...
I have used many of the "Super Storage" solutions for my weapons and have had good luck, but the steel, the coatings, and the "Grips" are simply not the same, so I started re-thinking their use for actual long term Razor Strorage..
Again Long Term defined as 1 Year + Unfortunately I can only give actual hands on results for 3+ yearsLast edited by gssixgun; 05-26-2014 at 04:24 PM.
