Thread: Jos. Mappin & Brothers?

This is my first post here -- but I picked up this razor from an antique shop today, and wonder if anyone can give me any info about the maker and approximate date? The blade is around 6/8, and, if not an actual wedge, it's close.

I just thought it was a cool razor for a good price, but when I tried to find info on it, I think it might a be a cool OLD razor.

If it's as cool as I think, I don't want to try to hone it, so I may need to find someone who can make it into a shaver.

Can anybody shed any light on how old this might be?

I had looked at those, but couldn't believe I found a razor from 1810-1880 in an antique store in Cisco, Texas, for $35!!

It's the oldest one I have, by either date.

It looks like a keeper. Good find.

I'd say "send it to me for a resto" but I already have my plate full with to many projects as it is. Gorgeous razor tho, wouldn't mind having it in my rotation.

Welcome to SRP. That is a beautiful blade. I've never seen one with the scalloped spine like that in a Mappin. Seen it in a W&B, but not a Mappin. I don't know if it is the camera angle but the scales (handles) look kind of thin for that size blade ? Anyway, check out member services for a honer, unless you are close to some of our Texas members who may be willing to give a hand.

You're right -- the scales are a little light (slim) for the blade, and it's pretty obvious in person that the pin on the tang end is a homemade replacement. The scales also appear to be plastic or something similar, where I would expect horn.

So somebody, at some time, for some reason, put the blade into a new set of scales.

While I wish I had the original scales, I'm not bummed out by it -- I can eventually put the blade in a set of scales worthy of the it, and not have to feel pangs because it's not "original."
