Default Warm Like an Old Blanket

    Gentlemen,

For the past couple years, I have mostly shaved with the big blades, the 7/8 and 8/8 razors including custom made, and loved the experience. Yet I have never forgotten the special affection for my 6/8 round points. I started with the 5/8 blades and soon moved to the 6/8, where I stayed for a number of years before exploring the bigger blades.

In the past weeks, I have found myself often slipping back in time and reaching for my beloved 6/8 round points. There is something warm and inviting about these razors, like an old blanket, or a sweet Pelikan fountain pen, that from to time reminds not to neglect them. After all, they have feelings, too. The past few days especially, I have automatically reached for them in the rack and started stropping without thought, as if they were my only razors. It is a kind of connection that requires no explanation, a good feeling like everything else in the world of traditional shaving with the straight razor.

Do you have a particular connection to certain razors in your shave den? Below is a photo of some of my sweet 6/8 round points.

Amen, Obie~ My monsters seem to be taking a back seat to 11/16-7/8 blades. Love the things.
One of my faves is this Hess 44 13/16.

Yes, this beauty was one of my first, a Max Sprecher restoration, my special connection to her was, that the B*&$^ cut me every time I used her; regardless of how much care I showed her,,, the blood would flow.

So I neutered her, by working her spike across a Norton 1000, then I left her in a dark drawer with a rusty Boker & a Wade & Butcher for a few days.

That was 3 years ago, she's in my rotation & has not drawn blood since. She got her mind right,,,,

Oh, my Obie, those razors would be warm and inviting in my house too. I will have to admit that although on most days I prefer my 7/8 and 8/8 razors, my 6/8 Le Grelot will sneak in there now and then and leaves me wondering if she isn't the best shaver in the bunch. I agree, the 6/8 round points provide a comfortable shave, like slipping on a nice, soft pair of slippers onto feet tired from a day's work.

All of my razors are special in their own way. Each one has a memory attached to it - mostly good, some not as good. I've been using the same razor now pretty consistently for at least 9 months (an occasional foray test shaving other people's), a little blue wonder whose edge just keeps going and going.

I hate when you all post threads like this, because it just makes me want to buy more razors.

The older I get the less I like my larger razors. At first it was just the clumsiness but now I just don't look forward to using them. I've actually sold off most of the 7/8s and 8/8s I had. I mostly kept my Livi's and a few others. I really prefer my 6/8s and 5/8s razors.

I still have too many razors to really say which are my favorites. It seems the one I am presently using is THE one.

I love my 5/8 and 6/8 Bengalls, Kropps and Invictas

I've shaved with a few others but I always come back to this trio of makers.
