Need new scales
eBay seller:21far21 does beautiful work making scales. From cedar to exotic woods. He is a good guy, fair and a fast shipper. From the great state of Texas.
There are several makers on eBay.

If you picked up the razor and pinched the two scales together that might cause them to snap at the hinge pin if they were brittle.
You could always post a Want to Buy in the classified section especially if you are looking for original scales.

If it's a 7/8, I have a set of curly bubinga w/ a red g10 wedge, and a set of purple heart w/ a jade g10 wedge that will fit. If interested, PM me. You can see the pics of the buginga on my profile, the purpleheart is the same design as well.
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.
