Question Anyone with any experience with a Dovo Inox #4155845 (or #4155846)?

    Hi gentlemen -

I wanted to ask if there is anyone who can give me a bit of information on the background of one or two particular Dovo stainless steel razors that have been on the market for a few years (or off the market, as the case may be), maybe since around 2009, according to what I've read. They are known as the "All Stainless", as they have stainless steel scales as well as a stainless steel blade (I'm sure you've seen them). There was a high-polished SS scale version (model number #4155845) released, which are impossible to find these days (at least in the US), and a more common "satin" or "matte" SS scale version (model number #4155846) which is still being sold, subject to stock availability, at several retailers in the US. That's really all I know about them. Specifically, why has the polished version become so scarce? Was it a European release only? Does anyone know where it is currently being sold, if at all? Thanks.

    The polished:

I can't help you however with stainless scales you need to watch the balance in the razor. If the scales are heavy the razor will torque away from you when you shave making use clumsy and forcing you to apply more pressure.

That is not a good thing.

Thanks for the tip. According to Jarrod Connerty at The Superior Shave, these weigh in at about 62 grams (including the scales), which is less than a Mühle R89 or R41 Safety Razor, which I do have experience with, and which are regarded as being particularly lightweight. But then they are DE's, not SR's, so it may be like comparing apples to oranges.

Yes, it is like comparing apples to oranges. Not being smart here, they are different tools and used differently.

Thanks for your candor. Is 62 grams heavy for an SR?

To be honest, I really could not tell you as I have never weighed my razors. Weight can vary considerable with the size pf the blade, type of grind the blade has, scale material and any additional ornamentation to the scales like bolsters.

It's not the weight, it's where the weight is (as TBS) pointed out. Scale heavy takes some getting used to. Personally, I would not keep stainless scales on a blade. I don't like the balance or the look. But you would have to try for yourself to see.

Honing one right now. Yes they are scale heavy. Not a great concept but I'm sure owners can adapt.

That's a fair point. Personally, I love the look of the Inox scales. It reminds me of an antique British Military full-wedge straight I saw on eBay a while back. It must have weighed a ton!

onimaru - are you honing a satin/matte version or a polished version?
