    Question Gold Dollar question

Hi guys. So i finally got my poor mans wet shave setup. gold Dollar "wet shave products" carbon fiber scale 6/8" x 3" razor, Scalpmaster 2.5" strop with linen, and Omega soap and brush kit. So far im most satisfied with the soap and brush, probably the best quality product out of my setup but hey, it all cost me around $40.

Anyway, this razor came "sharp", now i know its not shave ready, i knew it wouldnt be. The "shave ready" Gold Dollar blades were about twice the price. Thing is, i COULD shave with it if i really wanted to granted there would be alot of blood and possibly sweat and tears. It seems ALMOST shave ready. So my question is, could i possibly get this thing shave ready with just this strop. I feel like it doesnt need a stone. If so, should i use the linen side first?

    any help is appreciated. Thanks

Shave-ready should at the very least pop hairs effortlessly either with a hanging hair test or on your arm. Your razor will need a full honing on stones.

    Hey there-

Do you have another razor that you've shaved with to compare to? Honestly it would be hard to tell when something is shave ready if you don't have a reference. Obviously you could try to strop and shave, but again you wouldn't have a reference.
Would be good to send it out to someone willing to hone a Gold Dollar, or better yet, pick up another razor for almost the cost of a hone session. Vintage shave ready razors often come up in the classifieds on the order of 40.00... JMO

No,,,,,, have someone hone it for you or strop till sun up & then give it a shave test. Let us know how it was, tomorrow.

Ok thanks. And yea, compared to my shavette, this thing is a shovel. Ill take your word for it on the hone.

And by the way, some guy cudarunner offered to hone it. Is he cool?

It is possible to get a razor that is "almost there" to "shave ready" by using a strop. BUT!!!! you will also need to use several different pastes and lots of stropping. I have never actually done this, only heard of it. I think they take it to a 1k or 2k stone and hone it on there to ensure the bevel is set and then finish is off on varying grit levels of paste. However off of a 1k stone you should be able to pop hairs and even shave off of it decently when the bevel is set properly.

To answer your question, I have never had anything honed by him but he seems like a stand up guy on here. I would trust him with my razors if he offered me a similar proposition.

I am currently using a SE from cudarunner that he honed (which I believe he has quite a bit of experience doing). It is definitely shave ready, and very nice. Great guy.
