That is most often an impossible question to answer. There were many many artisan type cutlers making razors for other people and no real records are around for any of that. They are very often top quality items.

Hi, I also have a Perry Mason Co razor. It is not a Royal gold though. It is a PURFOCO and the razor was in almost new condition when I got my hands on it and I use it often.
The other old one is a Shumate Barber vintage 1900-1920 cant date it except for dates of operations.
There is something special about using a vintage blade that has good steel!

My experience with these "contract" razors has been, so far positive.
I have a few Chas. R. Coates barber supply razors. An "Ace" and "Chesapeake" model. As they are from a Baltimore Barber supply company. Turn of the century.
They are what passes for me a hometown razor. Have never heard of razors actually manufactured in Baltimore or Maryland for that matter.

Back when these were done. If you put your name on something. It held much more significance. Low quality products associated with your name and business. Was a thing that could be the end of your endeavor.

I believe most business men would have been careful in their choice of makers. And went with tried and true cutlers.
How many Yugo cars are running around in the US? Would you put your name on one of them?
I am always on the hunt for "Barber Supply" razors at reasonable prices.

I love the barber supply razors too. They come along now and then but always seem to be great shavers. I must have 5 or 6 different ones. Some just end with B.S. And that doesn't mean what you think it does.
