Razor I.D. & Info?
Razor I.D. & Info?
For your viewing pleasure, I present one razor still in the antique shop I found it in. From the looks of it, somebody attempted an amateur restoration by means of the steel wool the had laying on the kitchen sink for dishes. I'd like more info on it before I try to come to a decision for purchase.
It is stamped:
"Sheffield Razor Co
Sheffield, Eng"
The blade is etched with (I think, hard to read):
"Barber's Rattler
Fully Warranted"
The backside of the blade is blank, no stamp or etch. There are jimps only on the bottom of the tang (I remember that y'all use this to help date razors). Aside from the fact that the bevel is visible from space, "Warranted" has nearly had some of the lettering shaved off the bottom of the word; so it is likely much smaller than its original specs. Not that I remembered to measure it...
Again, any info on this razor and its maker would be appreciated!
Glare is not magnifying this flat edge...
The grind.
Beautiful bone scales. (what type?)
The etch.
Maker's stamp.Decades away from full-beard growing abilities.

Thanked: 3164There are records about the Sheffield Razor Co. going back to 1882. They were quite possibly active before this though. The Mackinley Tariff Act ensures that yours is post 1891 by virtu of the 'England' mark on the tang.
I have seen other articles about them on the net from 1925.
In 1970 the name was changed to 'Sheffield Blades' and the company supplied knives and blades to various trades. Sheffield Razor Co is still recorded along with their incorporation number at Companies House, but date of incorporation is not given. They are classified as a 'dissolved' company but again the date is not given, though I suspect it was not long after the change of name to Sheffield Blades. Sheffield blades was still trading in 1984.
Regards,
Neil

Thanked: 634Nice scales but a lot of hone wear on the shoulder. The blade is no where near its original size which is evident by how close to the edge the writing on the blade is.

That's because it is a shoulder-less razor. But it is definitely not of original size, as I presumed in the above post.
Thanks, as always to Mr. Miller. Our human encyclopedia of razors.
Through some sleepy web-fu, I found a mention of one here in an old SOTD post courtesy of nicknbleed:
