    Default New Greaves Razor

Hi everyone. Been following this forum for a while now, and was wondering is someone might have any information on a new razor i picked up. I picked this Greaves razor up on Ebay about a week ago, and was wondering if this could be a re-grind. The shortened blade length, and the decorative grooves ground into the spine make me think that this may not be original. It doesn't really bother me if it isn't original. After cleaning it up and honing it, i'll say that it's a great shaver. Thanks for any help you can give.

How long is the blade from shoulder to tip? Looks like there was a chip at heel that was ground out leaving the new shape.

The length is about 2 3/8" Here's a comparison with my other Greaves razor.

Congratulations, you have yourself a bonafide 19th century western ground folding kamisori from England. I hear they're quite rare.

But yes, shortened and the shoulder has been ground out. All things considered, it really doesn't look too bad, though. It seems to have been done by someone who had at least an idea of what they were doing.

Once I cleaned it up, it actually turned out a lot better than I thought it would. I've also found that I actually do like the shortened blade. Maybe I'll use this as my travel razor.

You did a fine job of cleaning it up. Was with problems and now customized, and He likes it. We have a winner !

Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

That's exactly my thoughts when I saw the heel ground away. It was probably chipped or cracked. I already knew it was shortened looking at it. I have a nice Wade & Butcher beveled spine blade that has a crack in the heel so it is a candidate for a heel grind. Still not a bad looking Greaves but I hope they didn't have to shorten it too much! They could have actually shortened the scales I think.........hmmmm maybe not though.
