Thread: Recommend a good half/quarter 6/8ish?

Dear All,

i used to have a nice collection of various straights a few years back before selling them all. I have recently got back in to straight razors again.

i started off with a friodur 472 and a small henkotsu kamisori.

although being very excited about the friodur due to its reputation, i was a little dissapointed with it. It has a "tin" like feed back to it when shaving, seems a bit flimsy and toy like. It struggled on my chin hair. The blade was professionally honed. I dont remember hollow grounds feeling like this.

the kamisori i think being thicker and heavier yielded better results.

maybe i am just a wedgier kind of guy? Maybe my beared prefers a half or quarter hollow. Which begs the question:

which 6/8ish quarter/half hollow preferably with a square or spanish point would you recommend? either vintage or modern.

If vintage, you can't go wrong with pretty much any heavy grind from Sheffield that's in good shape.

If you're looking for a solid feel, Hart Steel razors are in current production. It's a ridged 1/3rd hollow available in square point with satin or polished finish and your choice of 5,6 or 7/8" and scale material.

Harts are great shavers

It seems that the half hollows are a little easier to find in a vintage blade. I am not a big fan of many of the extra hollow blades. Keep an eye on the classifieds there are sweet blades that pass through often.

+2 for Hart, here is my 6/8 square point:

I don't own one yet, but I have heard good things about Portland Razor Co also.

Can't go wrong with a 1/4 hollow WACKER..French point too....

Most custom razors are quarter hollows, also Wacker make a nice quarter hollow old Sheffield razors there's a good choice out there.

I'd go vintage French. Both Thiers Issard and Le Grelot did 6/8 quarter hollow grinds. They are excellent shavers. My personal preference is for the Le Grelot.

Take a look at Japanese straights, they are mainly 1/2 hollow 13/16" and shave very well.
