Thanked: 7Craigslist sometimes, all over ebay, but need to know what you are looking at and be willing and able to put some work into the ones that are a good deal. There are also some moderately priced modern straights, but you need to be careful of quality of workmanship and materials on the low priced moderns.

For brand new I'd go with a Dovo, TI, Boker, or Ralf Aust. The Aust is probably the most bang for the buck. SRD has some nice beginner's kits at a good price.
For a vintage blade I'd check out the classifieds here.
For craigslist, ebay, and other online sites you really need some experience to know what to look for because there is a lot of garbage out there. Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead - Charles Bukowski

JIW,
criswilson gives sound advice to stay away from eBay and CraigsList until you know your way around the straight razor world. For now, I suggest opting for a 5/8 Ralf Aust, if you want a new production razor, or visit the classified here for vintage razors.
Also, choose a good strop, although it need not be too expensive. Remember, that $20 strop in all likelihood is not worth the money.
Finally, leave the honing for the future. For now, concentrate on sharpening your skill with the straight razor and learning how to strop properly.

Is there anything wrong with your no name razor?
There is always the Whipped Dog option too. There are many OK used razors there that may not be the prettiest, but are all good shavers. There is the "sight unseen" offer too if you just want any old thing that shaves. They also have some new Dovos for just $120.Than ≠ Then

In my rotation of some 40 odd razors with names like ERN, Rodgers, Monkhouse, Red Imp, etc, the standout is a no name razor that I've had for several years and it has held it's edge with linen/leather stropping only right from the beginning. I don't care about the name (or it's fame) since, for me, it's the quality of the shave above everything else. If I was told all I could have was five razors that one would head the list.

Maybe take the no name and send it out to have it evaluated as good advise has been given plenty of razors in our classifieds that will be ready to shave with , eBay and that other place will be a crap shoot at your level of experience and you will have as much money in one when your done , you will have not saved any money the most important thing you need right now is a properly honed razor and a decent strop , then weeks of using them till you know what your doing ,, may have to have it honed a couple times again , but still cheaper than trying to do it yourself at this stage. Show us pictures of what you have so we can help ,, plus I've mentioned I don't live far from you , I can assist if need be. Tc

Show some pics of it will help a lot,
I also have an unmarked vintage razor that shaves great
bluesman 112 shaves since honing nice work,
My nephew has been shaving with the same str8 with stropping only since Dec 2013
But Damn I track lots of info with my straights but not the count as I know this would just be evidence of my favouritism LOLLast edited by Substance; 07-11-2015 at 11:39 PM.
