    Default Found a cutthroat knife.

A friend found this from a relative hwo past away.
I know nothing about cutthroat knives because I have only used a shavette before.
I tried to Google it but didn't find anything so now I turn to the pros.
She asked me if I want this to use and I am really interested. Name: uploadfromtaptalk1440532857231.jpg

Do you think this is something to use? and what if I want to give her some money for it, is it worth anything?
Should she keep it or do you think that I can send it to a pro to get it to be usable?
    Thanks from Stockholm Sweden.

Looks to be a serviceable razor in good condition with nice scales, and had a gold wash etching on the blade, that were popular at the time, probably early 1900’s.

Not a particularly collectable razor brand that would command a high price. Value is in the eye of the buyer or holder, so we don’t quote prices, but you might find one on EBay.

Some metal polish would clean up the blade, but lose what wash remains on the blade. You could send it out to one of the honers in the classifieds for honing for $15-20.

Do read the Beginners Guide in the Library to get started. The Parlor forum/International Forum/ Nordic Region (here) may help you locate a mentor that can help you with shaving supplies in your country.

    Welcome.

Awsome, thank you for your answer.
It mean a lot to be able to find people who have the knowledge when I don't about a particular thing like this.

    Oh. That is of interest.
I can probably google it but it's more fun to ask you guys.
Any special brands I should look out for if I'm starting to enjoy the cutthroat shaving after this?

Heljestrand and Erik Anton Berg are two that come to mind. Beautiful razors!

Here are a couple of examples from the Straight Razor Database:

    Heljestrand, C V "MK No 32" 6/8 - Straight Razor Place Library

Have you used any of them?

No. I have never seen one in the in my area. If I found a razor from Berg or Heljestran at a local antique store I would pounce on it.

Yes, the Heljestrands are beautiful razors of high quality and craftsmanship, they are excellent shavers and very collectable, have a few.

You can most probably find them, much easier in Sweden than we can here. As said if you find one, you won’t be sorry. Check Ebay for current prices.

But, don’t get me wrong, the razor that was gifted you, once cleaned and honed will give you years of great shaves also, and it should clean up nicely.

It's a decent looking razor. It was made in Solingen, Germany which was one of the worlds centres of excellence when it comes to razor making so it's a quality item. Another good razor making area was Eskilstuna, Sweden so you might find a locally made razor if you look around.
Give the razor a good polish with something not too abrasive, like Maas and then send it off to get honed.
