There is of course some very famous and sought after wholesalers, who had razors made for them by other companies. I think everyone knows the famous names.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

Excellent point, Nelson. I would like to add that many Kotten were making razors independently (often under their own brand name) when there was a lull in jobs for freelancers by the big brands. These are just a few Kotten: Solinger Kotten an der Wupper - Übersicht (in German) - and that is not mentioning the hundreds of annexes to houses with just one or two people in them.

Also, there was a limited number of drop forges, which is why many razors share blanks with well known brands (prominent example: Dovo 25, Dubl Duck Satinedge, Otto Deutsch Hans - and several others).

Last, wages in kind. Freelance razor makers were often given excess blanks (to compensate for damage inflicted during production), or were allowed to simply keep (un)finished product. Some of these still pop up on eBay as "NOS" - with "maker's marks" laser etched into the tang.

So, three cheers to little known brands. I have quite a few, and they work as advertised. Good stuff.

I prefer to go after the little-known makers. The research is half the fun.

I have a 6/8 square point marked "51 The Victor". Absolutely great razor. One of if not my very favorite.
