Takeshi from aframes under his razor section describes how he met with Iwasaki. Asked about the different numbers/letters but was told it was long time ago and he couldn't remember.
Like Mark said, Fikira's site is like an encyclopedia and my go to place to read on Japanese razors.
To add pain to injury once you take some of the iwasaki's apart they also have a number or letter on there tang that is sometimes hidden by the scales.
