Thread: Possible aquisitons

Was trolling through some local antique shops today and ran across these two specimens. Sorry for crummy phone pics.


The Fromm really interests me. I suppose my question is, if its appropriate, are they worth a shot in particular the Fromm? From what I can find Fromm sounds like a great shaver, the Yankee Cutlery I couldn't find much info on it and not sure Im that interested in it. The nice lady at the counter said she would give a 35% discount on each so that brings the prices down a bit but still not sure. If I do get one or both I will not be restoring these myself as I am nowhere near good enough a shaver to think about restoring. I know there are plenty of great folks here at SRP that would do a great job on these. Thanks for any input and if this is not kosher per forum rules please excuse my post.

The Fromm, without better pictures looks nearly mint, it might still have an edge. The other one is nice but will need some work.

Yeah I would agree that the fromm is near mint. I had taken a better pic of it but apparently my phone didnt save it. My untrained eye didnt notice any rust or pitting. There was perhaps a small chip at the toe but I wasnt able to look for too long, was running out of time to pickup the kiddo. I think the other one will, as you put Harry stay for the next guy. Planning on going back tomorrow for a better look with some cash in hand. Thanks for help all.

I've restored a couple Fromm Red Heads. They're really nice razors.

I acquired a NOS Fromm Red Head #50 with case a while back, didn't need any cleaning just honed her up and gave a fantastic shave. I would certainly go for the Red Head.

As far as the Yankee Cutlery I believe I would pass on that one as it needs too much work for what they are asking for it even at 35% off.

Came by this am with a loupe. Not a lot of surface rust except the large spot toward the edge. There are a few chips in the edge but the bevel itself looked pretty even. Only spot that worries me was at the toe. There is a chip from the very tip and then a chip right behind it that seems as if it got pinched in something if that makes sense. No deep crack that I saw. For the experts is this a huge honing challenge? Thanks again.

That gunk towards the edge looks slightly worrying, but I'm not sure. Doesn't even look like there's a bevel nor any hone wear on there yet....

Depending how bad/deep the rust is near the edge/bevel of a blade you may have to hone quite a bit of metal away to get to solid good steel with no pitting in the bevel. As you have some chips in the edge you will have to hone those out anyway. For that reason it may work out well.
