As one suggested the Ralf Aust is very hard to beat as a razor at their price point! I have two and will buy more for sure. They hold an edge as good as any razor as long as you know how to maintain the edge.
My razors have remained under $275 and I plan to keep it that way. That said, I am intrigued by BBC razors in TN. I may have to try one of Brian's creations some day!
But I have Dovo; Boker; Revisor; Ralf Aust; PRC; and Jerry Stark razors. The last two are US makers. If I had to pick one country that does best it would be the German made razors. The Germans seem to do all things well for the most part. But I really will try most any reputable maker if the price fits my budget.German blade snob!

Thanked: 101As long as I can find vintage razors in great shape for less than $30.00 I see no need to buy a new one. Why when I have a 150 year old Wade & Butcher that will out shave ANY new or old straight I have ever used. I use this razor about twice a week for a nice, smooth shave. I have several other razors that are as sharp or sharper but not as smooth. I think I payed $9.00 for it with original black horn scales. I want to start making razors myself & then I may start buying new ones to see what everyone else is doing but the designs from the 1840's seem to work just fine.

Thanked: 3226Truth be told, that is why I have bought only 1 new razor. I bought it to see if I would gain something in the shave over the far less expensive vintage razors I have. New and vintage turned out to be about equal in that department, so no real gain there. OTH, there is something about getting a brand spanking new razor that has a draw all it's own. Very few of the custom made razors turn my crank, mostly for their outlandish designs in my eyes, which is just as well as they are out of my league expense wise. Have to admit though there is the odd custom that appeals to me if they are of classic design. There is something for everyone's taste and budget in this game and good thing too.

I would say save a little more and for 450-500 you can get a truly custom one of a kind from Koraat. I think for that level of razor it's the best thing going right now. They are fantastic razors.

Thanked: 2284Oh man, now we're really getting into it! Once you've saved $450-$500, save a bit more and for $550-$600 you can get an Ali's Blade. His blades sell out in minutes and are fine pieces of art that shave like laser beams!
