I started my straight shaving journey with a sight unseen from Whipped Dog. It turned out to be an ATE razor. Nothing fancy but got me going. Still use his brush in my 3 brush rotation. I also occasionally use the razor just out of personal nostalgia. No regrets but not the only inexpensive option to get started. The knowledge I gained from being on here has been the biggest factor in my success and enjoyment in this hobby. Ken

My understanding is that the ugly razor is likely to be ugly, but it will be sharp.

I bought 2 sight unseen razors (one flawed, one not). Both shave wonderfully, but they aren't pretty. And that's just fine with me because I value function much more highly than form.
My experience is that he's an extremely nice guy and fully backs up his wares. But his website flat out tells you that all corners are cut to keep prices low, but not at the sacrifice of shave quality.
If pretty is important to you, Larry isn't your guy. If knowing exactly what you're going to get is important to you, Larry isn't your guy.
Personally, the sight unseen mystery made it all the more fun. Also, I had no idea what sort of size, grind, etc I'd like so I just went that route to save myself the frustration of analyzing everything to death.

Thanked: 1I purchased my 1st SR from WD, it was a pipe razor, the scales ended up being broken and the edge wasn't sharp even though they said it was shave ready. I got a partial refund

Thanked: 3795Have you shaved with anything else yet? Whenever a beginner assesses a straight razor, you never know if the razor or the shaver is the problem.

Thanked: 7My razor was from WD. Shaves and all. Has pitting not too pretty but goes along. I'm gonna send it out to get honed and am thinking of ordering a second one before that. There is also a guy who does sight unseen on etsy. Seems to have good reviews there. That's where i think I will try next.
