I have extra large hands and I've yet to find a 5/8 that I can hold comfortably. I must also have a large head, as a 6/8 or 7/8 blade is just more efficient and is more comfortable to shave with. Why use a tool that is too small, or too large for the task that needs to be done? One size doesn't fit all.

Thanked: 101I have them all from 4/8" to 1" & I have good & bad in all the sizes. I have a pretty thick & tough beard so I find that razors that are larger & heavier seem to work better for me. I usually shave every other day & when I shave every day I can use smaller blades I find.

Thanked: 3225I guess it is a matter of personal preference. I'm a fairly big guy, 6-2/184 lbs, with big hands and find 5/8 to 6/8 is about right for me. I have one close to 8/8 in size but seems awkward to use, like shaving with a spatula. Even with a 5/8 razor I can do half my face before I need clean off the blade. The 4/8s I have are a bit small for my liking and seem to be more trouble to strop comfortably. Everyone one has their own Goldilocks size razor.

Yes and no.
the prevalence of 5/8 to 6/8 in size is probably caused by the fact that that back in the day they were made in a production line mass production setup, and those sizes were most common. When you work with double wheel hollow grinders, it is also most efficient if you work on razors that are more or less similar in size. And the same economics work out when you buy pre hardened blanks that were stamped blanks.
Also there is the matter of balance. Most razors I get requests for have longer tails and wider tangs. Having a petite 5/8 blade on that would look a bit out of place imo.
And with larger blades, there is also more opportunity to put some filework on top, or do more interesting things with the shoulder transition. If you look at my predator model for example, there is just no way to made those designs in a 5/8 and still have something that feels solid in your hands.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

Thanked: 39I wish I was your size or MAYBE not! I have the short mans temper who can least afford it. I am 5'0 and a 100bs. (just lost 10 lbs. being sick from being out of my pain meds for 8 days). The people I have met who have needed a good beating are many. Getting back to razors I like a good heavy 5/8ths or a 6/8ths. I have my eye on a few razors right now that looked like they where 11/16ths or 6/8ths on the net, but when I asked them about it, it turns out they were 5/8ths. If they are quarter to half hollow they will get my bid or payment. I do have a 4/8ths H.C. Wentworth that shaves VERY nice though. I also get peeved seeing a "newly listed" good razor and have to wait the 6 days!!. I saw a salesman razor display box go from $22.00 to over $70.00 in the last 6 hours just recently. The guy said he had 22 different bidders at one point. I have a bunch of razors to sell ( or hopefully sell) from recently changing from one razor manufacturer to another. It IS tough though finding a good 6/8ths razor in good shape though, A LOT I have seen are half rusted up POS's or they have been priced like they are the last ones left to sell in the world.
ALSO, why don't these sellers of straight razors post the WIDTH of the razor?? They will tell you the length of the blade, the length of the handle etc, but not the width. It seems I am always asking folks how wide their razor is because its tough a lot of times determining the width because of the way the pictures are taken.Last edited by THORandODIN; 08-10-2016 at 08:55 PM.
