    Default Dewey Razor Company?

    Hi!

I'm new to all of this so please excuse any misinformation that I may have. I've been attempting to find some information on a straight razor that I currently have in my possession. It's a folding straight razor with a cream/ivory colored handle. The tang says that it was made by the Dewey Razor Co in Germany, and the blade has a World's Fair 1893 etching (with the globe symbol not the etching of the fairgrounds). I can't seem to find anything about the Dewey Razor Co and was just wondering if any of you knew anything or knew of where I could find any information?

Here's a picture of the blade:

    Thank you for your help!

I looked on Strazors and could not find a link and that site is pretty inclusive. There were so many little German offshoots it seems now that I am into straight razors from Germany that it is almost hard to keep up with them all! I think a lot were made by same companies and the names on the razor were the importers <?????

I am sure someone will chime in soon.

That's exactly the trouble that I was running into! I found a lot of companies that had made razors like this for the world's fair but could not find any mention of Dewey Co. Tons of companies from Germany but not this one!

    Thank you for looking!

I wonder if Dewey Was a Wholesaler or Barber supply who had razors made for them in Germany. Dewey sounds like an English name but I am probably wrong.
Cool razor by the way! ;-)

As Dewey is my surname, this thread caught my eye. Dewey is a Welsh name.
    Last name origin & meaning:

Welsh : from the personal name Dewi, Welsh form of David.
Anglicized form of a French Huguenot name of uncertain form and origin. Traditionally it is recorded as Douai,
from a place in northern France, but it could also be from Old Norman French du we(z) ‘of the ford’, from a
variant of standard French guĂ© ‘ford’.
Thomas Duee of Sandwich, Kent, England, emigrated to Dorchester, MA, in 1634, where his name is recorded
as Dewey. Another line is apparently descended from a Huguenot family called Douai, who settled in Kent,
England, in the latter half of the 16th century. The connection, if any, between the two Kentish families is not clear.

Found this in the Razor Makers link -

    C. Friedrich Kratz & Co. GmbH. Founded in 1890. Wald bei Solingen in 1920. Brand names: 'Fram' (1907),
    'Kratz' (1902), 'Melior' (1911), 'Owigut' (1918), 'The Dewey Razor' (1899), 'Vesuvio' (1911).

Some marks stood the test of time, but many remained fashionable only for short periods. This was particulary
true of those that celebrated specific events or personality: for example, 'Admiral Dewey' honoured the victor
of the Battle of Santiago during the Spanish-American War of 1898 and 'Culebra Cut' marked completion of the
final stages of the construction of the Panama Canal.
