Nitrocellulose colored varnish was probably what was used. Old nail polisher were this kind of thing, and the properties of the solvents (methyl cyanide or acetone) would assure a nice bond of the colored varnish to the celluloid substrate.
Thank you, Richard, for the nice insight given.

In my younger days I made my living as airbrush artist, I'm thinking that's how these colors were applied in the first place. Baked on Enamel or Lacquer sealed with clear Lacquer.

Ha, ha! I was just going to say that guitar bodies are painted with Nitrocellulose. I still have a Fender Strat I need to sell & it is in near mint condition. Every time I open the case on it, I can smell the Nitrocellulose!

Size: 19.8 KBI have seem 2 kinds of scales. One type is a bone color with some sort of color painted on. In most cases that color is almost completely gone. In other cases the scales were made with the color in the material itself. I have a beautiful "marbilized" one. I will try to up load pictures of each. Obviously, only the ones wit the color painted on need restoration.

The pink one has color all the way through. The green one was Painted on and you can see how the color is fading away.

that's what i was thinking. if i were to recolor one it would be in a way that would highlight the low spots, not to make it a solid color.

I am no arteest, but if I got pissed at my work using water-based, I could just wipe it clean.
Some wiping, dabbing, and brushing can be done along the way as well.

Then, blowing several mist coats of good clear on from a bit far coats it well, does not shine too much. Makes it permanent for a long time, FME!

I have three Antoni Tadross with only one scale that is colored. The back scale is the same pattern as the front but not colored.

I wouldn't, I like it's look. However, I have several others that have only a tiny spec of color here and there, Those I would like to recolor.
