Thread: Razor colrs

Can someone post or point me towards other posts that talk about old razor colors. On some scales that I have cleaned up, you can still see tiny flecks of Red. I also gave one from the worlds fair in St Louis that has almost all of its original green color on the scales. Is it possible to re-color these ? Any help is appreciated

Since my time here , I have not read many threads talking about the original color of certain scales. At least not threads dedicated to that exact topic. Usually the question may come up about a certain brand razor, as to whether the scales on it are original.

A little later tonight I will research the question in the "Advanced Search" area, I will see if I can find a few links to threads that might help and I'll post them here for you.

Thank you for your help. Given how much care people put into restoring old razors and scales, I was surprised ho little information I could find.

There is probably a lot of information here on your topic, but it will be scattered throughout the forum.

might be a silly question to the op but, are you talking about "fancy" scales with color added? If that is the case I just read a post in the workshop about using water colors to redo the color on the fancy scales. Hope this helps

I have seem 2 kinds of scales. One type is a bone color with some sort of color painted on. In most cases that color is almost completely gone. In other cases the scales were made with the color in the material itself. I have a beautiful "marbilized" one. I will try to up load pictures of each. Obviously, only the ones wit the color painted on need restoration.

The pink one has color all the way through. The green one was Painted on and you can see how the color is fading away.

BTW, I actually CAN spell. I just can't type in case you are wondering.

Great post. I've seen so many beautiful celluloid scales with worn colors. Would be nice to know how to bring back their glory.

Welcome to SRP, If your talking about scales like on the picture below, yes it is possible to re-color them. Like previously mentioned water colors followed with a sealer is one way to go.

So you're the guy that got the $2K snake scales off the 'bay?!?!?

Judging from a few colored razor scales I have handled, some were done in a cellulose lacquer ( like older model airplane paints) and some seem to have been done in fast dry oil colors ( like modern artist's colors.)
