You don't need anything higher than 12k, if you want scary sharp without paying big bucks, chromium oxide pasted strop will do the trick.

Your new razor from Aust or Revisor should be shave ready. Sharpening straight razors is very different than knives. With a new shave ready razor all you need to worry about is regular maintenance, the SRP wiki is your friend.
