    Amber would be easy to work and relatively lightweight stuff but finding it in a size suitable for scales would be unlikely and it would be very, very expensive. Petrified wood I would think would be very heavy; too heavy to be practical, unfortunately.

    They have an entire room of amber in the Catherine Palace of Tsarskoye Selo near Saint Petersburg.

    Maybe you could get some from the scrap left over from the restoration. Either that or just take it like the Germans did, LOL.
