    Default Mammoth Ivory

Here's my first mammoth ivory razor. This is highly sought after "blue" ivory". The concave grind (fameback) razors are going to be sold through ShavingShop.com and this is one of the ones that will be arriving in the first batch.

It certainly is different. Why is that particular ivory so sought after?

The "blue" mammoth ivory is the least common and is generally considered the most attractive of the ivory colors. Most is tan or brown. Blue and green colors are harder to get. The coloration depends on the mineral leaching that takes place over 10,000 years or so while it's been buried.

Robert that razor is absolutely stunning.
I'm not a fan of ivory but after seeing this I have changed my mind.
I love the history that can be seen in that handle... truly awe-inspiring.

When will this batch be arriving to the shave-shop, and do you have any idea how much of this material is available in the world?

    Thanks for the pics!

I expect to get them out sometime this month. I've got other custom stuff going on at the same time, so it's going to be a really busy month. I don't know how much mammoth ivory there is available in the world. I know it's being mined pretty heavily and it's found wherever it's found and the supply is, of course, limited and will eventually be exhausted for all practical purposes.

I mean, I guess ... if you like that sort of thing. I mean, ... if that's what you're in to.

As usual, stunning vision and workmanship, Robert.

    Please...stop, stop, I can't take it anymore.

Actually the supply of that stuff is increasing as time goes by. Thanks to global warming as the ice retreats more and more of the stuff is appearing. In some areas of Siberia and parts of canada and Alaska people make a very nice living digging up the stuff. The surface Ivory is the rarest because there is only so much of it the underneath part is in greater supply because the is so much more of it.

Quick! Throw another log on the fire!

I once read that if people in siberia find a woolly mammoth or once of its predecessors in ice, they simply eat it and sell the ivory.

Petrified wood would also be stunning to make scales from, though I don't know if you can work it without breaking it.

Or amber - how hard is it to work with amber?

I know you can drill and sand amber so that should at least be possible. Amber is resin based so it is fairly tough.
