Sounds a bit ridiculous to me.
Although think of a football back then ,hefty leather and some weight to it.
Probably the weight of the ball alone could kill a man

was it common to do barbering by a ball field?

Interesting case, I guess the law saw the barber liable for the crime based more on his negligence in not doing his barbering in a protected enough area. For the ball players i imagine it was just understood that a ball may fly in a random direction from time to time and that's just part of the game. Its crazy bad luck things like this that prompt law makers to create all sorts of regulations on how one should conduct ones business and maybe where ball parks can be zoned. What a load of bad luck for this guy just wanting a quick shave.
Don't drink and shave!

I have never thought about getting a shave at a ballgame but a massage.... I liked their old stadium better!

Thanked: 315Was that supposed to be a documented case or a hypothetical situation to pose a question of liability?
Wouldn't the barber be working indoors?

Thanked: 315True. I guess even if they were indoors the door/windows would have been open as well.
You always want your barber to have plenty of light when you go in for a blood-letting or to have a tooth pulled!

Thanked: 7I lock the bathroom door when I shave for fear someone will barge in right as I put blade to skin.
