Thanked: 0Filarmonica Doble Temple 7/8
http://www.classicshaving.com/catalo...51/1555127.htm
I just paid for one of these razors. It looks like a great deal. Then I noticed the info says that it is made of surgical steel. My first razor and the only real criteria that I had was that it be 6/8 or larger and that it be made of carbon steel.
Is this razor going to be a nightmare to hone or do you think I did alright?
I wouldn't have dropped a hundred on it had I noticed that but I really thought that all of Filarmonica's stuff was from Solingen.
Thanks for any input,
Chris

Its a good razor. I think it is actually carbon steel. I did have a difficult time honing mine (I'm fairly new to honing), but once there its a sweet razor and keeps its edge with minimal work. I think you did fine. If you can, it might be worthwhile to get classic's sharpening service before they send it to you.

EDIT: Oh, and welcome to the board

Thanked: 0Thanks
Thanks for the welcome. I'm the Obsessive compulsive type when it comes to new hobbies. I have read more than I am willing to admit about straights, shaving, stropping, honing etc.

Thanked: 9Welcome!
It believe it is not stainless. However, these are still hard to hone, from what I hear. Call CS to pay additional $20 or whatever it is to get it honed by Lynn (he's an SRP founder and does the honing for CS) and you should be set.
If it's already sent you can still have it honed by a honemeister after you get it. There are a few members here that offer these services.
Your first razor HAS to be shave-ready, and the only way to ensure this is to send it to a honemeister. I think if it already is - they won't charge you for honing, so you can't lose
Cheers

I have a Filly #13 sub-cero that I got off eBay a few weeks ago. It's a 6/8 semi-round that I had honed by Lynn Abrams (Classic Shaving uses Lynn for their honing service as well) and it is phenomenal! I love this razor. It's not exactly the same as yours but Fillys are fantastic all the way around. You did not go wrong with this razor at all. If this is your first razor it may be a tad large to learn on, but YMMV.
Good luck and have fun.
Welcome to SRP.

I think the 7/8 fili is 440 surgical stainless. I could be wrong
They are a hard razor to hone "well" but when you get that edge they are a great shave and hold the edge for what seems for ever.

IMO the smiling blade profile will make this more difficult to hone than the fact that it is made out of very strong carbon steel. I also would highly recommend sending it to a honemeister, as these are not good razors to learn on in my experience. If you are trying to learn to hone get an inexpensive carbon steel razor with a straight blade profile such as a wipienica.

Thanked: 1I thought I had mine where I wanted it, but no, I seem to have sharpened and unsharpened twice over or so.
I dislike trying to hone this thing, I just don't have the skill.
Happened with my 3/8ths too, I like my edges plain I guess.
If you aren't good with the hone, send it out to one of the guys here.

Thanked: 0Enjoy
Good choice to order... I can't do that anymore, the Fillys are "Sold Out"! Again I was contemplating them (after some thoughts of Thiers-Issards, Dovos and other stuff, from which eventually I will get some razors) and fooling around with the idea of ordering one, but it seems that.... no, I won't do it.
What else can I say than... Enjoy!

Thanked: 324Man, I really HATE the term "surgical steel". It's so loosely used that the only thing you can be sure of is that it's steel of one grade or another and it could be the worst of the worst and still be called "surgical steel".
But..... Filly razors are another brand that's VERY good. As with all steels, I guess it really doesn't matter what they call it, as long as they use a good steel and know how to heat treat and temper it properly and I'd say Filly did that jsut fine. I've got a number of Filly razors and they're good shavers. Most are too thin in the blade for my personal preference, but they'll take a very good edge and give you a nice clean shave.
