Question Question about wedge razor - Neptune Solingen in Geschmiedet

    Hello folks:

Currently I am using a 6/8 half-hollow bonza but looking to try something different. I am interested in buying a small 4/8 wedge razor called a Neptune Solingen in Geschmiedet. I haven't been able to find any information on this brand. Is this a decent razor? Is there anyone here that can tell me more about this brand?

    Thanks!

You should have mentioned it was on B-S-T. I am sure any razor on there will be ok. The people here know the difference between a straight razor and a razor knife.

I noticed that there were at least 200 views of this razor but no one has touched it yet. It seems the seller has put quite a bit of work into honing it too. Is this because wedges arn't as popular as the hollows?

No, it's because there is little love for a 4/8s razor. A 4/8s wedge is a really queer duck to boot.

I looked at the razor and didn’t see that the seller put any more into honing then an average progression. I think that razor looks pretty cool actually. I have a pair of Holley razors a 4/8 and a 3/8 that came as a set. They shave great.

I too at one time thought a 4/8 wedge would be the the ticket to a daily great shave.. I am a 5-7 day a week full face shaver, pretty pronounced jaw line, chin with a couple good scars, thick upper lip whiskers, etc.. Now I dont have anything bad to say about that little guy as it worked as it should... But, for me it was just too small to use for full shave (they dont hold any lather) that I just phased it out.. I actually was thinning down to a more manageable razor count a few months ago and a member bought 3 razors from me.. I saw that little bugger sitting in my shave cabinet and us memory serves I dont think I even told the buyer I was giving it to him.. Anyway sorry about a little rambling but unless you are getting that razor for next to nothing or you just really want to use a 4/8 I wouldn't purchase.. Someone on here might even have one buried deep in the vault they would let you borrow? Whatever you decide good luck.. Scott

It's one thing to see a shaver which has been worn/damaged down to that smaller size.
    Certainly a turn-off.

Quite another to see one made to be that size.
They are surprisingly efficient, esp in good nick.

Yup, the razor looks in good shape, the size is original and it went through a normal honing process. Should shave as well as any other razor if you like a 4/8 size razor. For some reason 4/8 is not a popular size is all.

Ya. I have a few. One is a smiler, so it acts bigger than it is.

In the modern-grinds, 9/16 can be the sweet spot
That is getting as small as can be, IMO.
It depends on how it was treated, I suppose.

Seems to me, the wedge variety works nice in those made small.

For me, as someone mentioned above it’s about how much shave debris the blade can hold.
4/8 just need to be cleaned more often or you need to be ok with lather bombs on your belly.
Blade looks great if you are looking for a narrower razor..
