I like them too. I doubt the rumour that all the export razors were junk made by apprentices. I think that for a very long time German manufactures were known for very tight QC.

I must have missed that particular rumour. I would need to look up the name of the company, but they made razors for the LatAm markets, and their razors are exceptional. I still have three of them and definitely would not trade them.

Ah, yes. Mann & Federlein. Got them from one of the heirs. He had a few hundred of them.

It is said that in the heydays there were hundreds of straight razor smiths in Solingen. That is rubbish. There were only about five that churned out hundreds of brands of very similar looking razors.

This is more proof then the other theory, a friend of a friend.

Possibly, yes. But only because the underlying assumption is wrong.

First, Solingen was basically erased in WW2. So there are few remaining documents from the (pre-) war era. Which, incidentally, is the era in which most of the razors of acute interest were made. There will almost never be written proof on anything. So you have to rely on witness testimony.

Second, it's been almost a lifetime since the heyday of Solingen razor production. So finding witnesses will be next to impossible.

Third, hardly anyone here speaks the language. So even if you found them (I did) you would not be able to ask them questions.

Last, this forum is a niche forum. It also has members with vested interests (every owner of an overpriced, hyped razor or hone, for example). So there is lots of confirmation bias. I did what I can do, went to Solingen, asked around, and also spoke with the current owners of the aforementioned drop forge. I had my questions answered. It's up to anyone else to believe what I heard or not.

But let me put it this way: it's been more than five years since I last bought a razor, and seven since I sold one. What incentive could I possibly have to start a myth? I'm here because I believe in objective reality. I really cannot be bothered with folklore, conjecture, and - worst of all - confirmation bias. That's all.
    Badgister and boz like this.
