Default New to me razor.. interesting leather pouch also.

Hey guys got this new to me straight also came with a interesting (to me at least) leather pouch/case.

I'm a leather crafter so always interested in how and why when I come across old leather items. This one does things that were unnecessary to protect the razor really so they likely did it this way to practice this particular type of sawing technique.

The razor is a grah and plumacher, weyer Solingen, from all I can find online they are a good possibility a tad rare, dare I say? Maker..

Sits flat and good both sides on the hones and all parts of the blade are getting attention on the few laps I did on the #8000 purple slate hone. It's got some small micro chips near the heel so a gentle bread knife and then up though the stones.

Blades about 21mm but going to lose at least 1/2 mm to a mm.

Any tips on cleaning the scales? can I brighten them up or is it just a clean and they will be as are?

You can use pipe cleaners to go between the scales, and dental floss for the pins.

Why would that blade lose 1/2 to 1 mm ? It seems ok like that...
The maker is... Let's say quite generic.

But this leather case is indeed interesting. As you are someone from the craft could you elaborate on
    - Which things are unnecessary ?
    - How it was built ?
Beautiful is important, but when all is said and done, you will always be faithful to a good shaver while a bad one may detter you from ever trying again. Judge with your skin, not your eyes.

I'm a leather worker myself and. can appreciate how the case was made. There are many different ways to make a case.(I've made a few myself). What's your take on it?

They made razors branded Gotta & Black Diamond, among a few others.

For a pouch its had a awful lot of labour spend on it, high thread count that's not necessarily and the construction is more like creating a leather box than a pouch.

    Cheers for the tips.

He must of been using it as a exercise in practicing like I think all us leather crafters do. Thread count is unnecessary high and it's built like a case but not the best of leather cases as for those you have to mitre the leather to then sow through both parts in a nice straight line.

Must of used a curved needle? Didn't have an abundance of tools? No groover/ v groover and the setting out is not great. Sturdy though..

What's your take on it ?

Interesting case. I was wondering if it was hinged.

I would think some cushioning in the extra room at the top would be nice to keep the razor from rattling around to much especially during travel.

The awl was pushed straight through both pieces at an angle. Small variations in that angle are what caused the rolling, uneven, stitch line on the edges. It is an advanced technique, usually seen used for a plug at the bottom of a holster or a cylindrical item like a spyglass case.

if the maker had used a groover to cut a channel for the threads to live in, it may have helped some to clean up the wavy stitch line on the edges. He did use a stitch wheel, the stitch lengths are very consistent.

in any case, it is functional and the maker, assuming he was a hobbyist and not professional, could be proud of his work.

A German razor? I believe. Sorry, my eyesight is not very good, so I couldn't see the brand of the razor clearly. The case may be old, but it's very beautiful! I don't have the habit of using a razor to shave closely because it's too long. I only use electric razors. If you are looking for an electric shaver, you can check it out here . I just found it myself.
