Thanked: 0Joseph Elliott Union razor oddness
Hey all
I just got this razor from a razor guy on eBay and while I thought it was shoulder less it turns out that it has a wide shoulder above the heel of the razor. The Shoulder is about 1 mm wider then the spine but blends in over a few mm. With the razor heel first on the stone beyond 45°, it feels like that shoulder is still hitting. Any tips on this type of grind?
The razor listing is https://www.ebay.com/itm/155926510515

Thanked: 43Sorry but that razor looks like it was put to a grinder/buffer and completely messed up.
Looks like a Faux Frameback/Rattler that has been rounded off with a buffer.
Really too bad what some will do to a razor.
The transition to the thicker area should be a crisp one - not so rounded.

Thanked: 0Should I give a 3 star review? What you are saying about it being a diy regrind for a problem I don't understand makes sense; the spine is more uneven than I have seen before the shoulder. It also looks like the majestic profile of a sperm whale in person. It is a wedge grind and I want to try and shave with it.
Ideas - I can hone it as is but I don't think I can strop the heel without riding on the new shoulder.
I think I want to tame the smile to a constant radius and try and get rid of the shoulder.
Tips?
Thanks!
I could make it

Thanked: 43Not really sure what you are calling the shoulder. It is a shoulderless grind.
It is NOT a wedge grind!
Ebay pictures are not great. Can you post a photo from the toe or point of the razor to see the actual grind.
The spine wear is uneven but that does not mean anything really. It might, might not. Perhaps the razor has been corrected and you are seeing. the results from that. I would sharpy the edge and see what's what before doing anything If contact is all over the place then it has been messed up and will need to be fixed.
The seller states that it is "sharp and recently honed" If you sharpie the edge you should have full contact all along the edge within a stroke or two. If you don't, I would leave a less than stellar review as to the state of razor as received.

Yeah, that one's pretty gone.
Should look like this.
Most I find are wore out from over honing, or misused. Keep looking IMOMike
