Default Josh Mappin & Brothers Lancet Edge Razor

Some may remember i picked up 4 of these in a box a couple of weeks age, I just got them.

    the shanks are stamped:
    Josh Mappin & Brothers
    Queen's Cutlery Works
    Sheffield

    the blade is stamped:
    Lancet Edge Razor
    Registered 22nd January 1848

the box with its red velvet is pretty much shot but it has done a pretty good job protecting the razors over the years.

the razors are numbers: I, IV, VI and VII of a seven day set, in the group photos below that is their order from left to right.

the seller thought the were ivory celluloid but they feel and look like some of my other ivory scales and they passed the hot needle test.

there is some rust, pitting and staining on the blades, #7 has a chip in the scales near the pivot pin. very little hone wear.

so far the only thing i have done to them is to wash them and rub them down with MAAS, except number 4.

Number 4 at first i did not think was part of the set the number was mostly polished off already so i decided to clean it up a bit with a dremel, there was some red rust near the pivot and in the jimps. after the cleaning and another MAAS rubdown i decided to test the edge. First i poured 90%rubbing alcohol all over the razor and then tried it on my arm. it easily took hair off my arm so i took my 4k/8k Norton out of its bucket and gave it 20 laps on the 8k side. nicer but could be better so 25 laps on a Hunsrueck (basically a thuringen stone) and it was ready to go!

three fairly comfortable passes it needs a little more work but the edge is pretty much there.

Thanks everyone for thinking they are nice... just wait to you see them after i break all the ivory trying to clean up the rust... then you can cry with me.

    Gary,
based on todays shave with number 4 they are truly going to be great... i may even have to sell off some of the other children so that their crying because they are out of the rotation does not upset the new ones

Have you considered seeing a Psychiatrist about the voices you are hearing in your head?
