Noob ebay razor purchase
Hi, am noob to str8 razor i just recieved this razor today that i won on ebay , i paid $13.00 + 4 dollars for shipping.looks like pearl inlay, looks better in person the pic does not do the inlay justice. It says Adolph Strauss & CO made in Germany the other side has the # 814.This the first used razor i have purchased my other razor is a new wapi.By looking at the pic can you tell me if this razor is usable if i clean it up and hone it,or was it a bad purchase.

Thanked: 0Shows a little bit of hone wear but other than that it's in good shape! Those scales are cool.

Agreed, nice scales and a good looking spike point.
All-in-all I'd say it was a great purchase!
If you are very new to str8 razors, you may want to consider sending her off to a honemiester from here to re-set the bevel and hone her up to it's full potential!
The only "issue" I would see from the pic (and this is a real reach) is that the edge looks like it MAY be a bit uneven. A re-set of the edge including the bevel would get her str8 and an arrow and should make for a great shaver!
If you have another shaver, this may be a great candidate for a learner blade to work to reset the edge and bevel yourself. One of the things I personally find very rewarding is taking a blade from butter-knife to shaving myself. Just a thought....

I can't say about the blade, but the inlay may be abalone which is like a darker pearl and very nice. Congratulations.

A terrible waste of money. Send it to me at once and I will dispose of it for you as I run a home for tasty razors that people have bought for Very Little Money. Seriously, you do not want this razor. If you hone it you will only cut yourself. Send it to me NOW. Be safe!
Aside from the dribbling rant, what a nice-looking piece! (I still want you to send it to me though).

Thanked: 1It's sure nice to see a n00b actually spend less than $20 and make a GOOD purchase, unlike many of us poor ebayers. (I got two nonshaveable ones)

Thx gentlemen for all the information,i sanded the blade tried to clean it up a little still need's a little more work on the shank and tang .here is a another pic not great but not bad. I have tried to hone it with what i believe to be a small belgium combo stone that i have.I will be giving it a barbacide bath and try it out as soon as i recieve some of the other str8's i won on ebay.I have completly lost my mind i had to shut down my computer i wanted to buy every razor i saw on ebay .If you see a well shaven homeless man that might be me if i dont stay away from ebay. i will post some pics as i recieve some of my ebay razors as i recieve them.

Here is one that i recieved today, very nice looking str8 i took a chance on this 1 the pic was really small and not that clear on ebay .There is a nic in the blade and i dont know if caused it or if it came like this ,the razor came in its original box but 1 end was ripped and the razor slid out and fell to the floor as i was removing it .the the nic shows up a little better in the second pic, would 600 grit wet/dry work to get this out.

That looks to be a fairly significant edge chip, I would recommend the expertise of one of the many restoration and honing experts here. That may be more work than an amateur can handle easily.
