I love those drawings. There are some very fine design ideas among them, particularly the ones with the "nautilus"-style ornaments. I reckon you know Jules Verne?
I have still a few other woodworking projects to finish first (among them a shaving box) but in some future I intend to do a few sets of scales as well. Maybe we can get together in my woodshop at that time and see what we can come up with in a joined effort. My best friend shaves with a straight as well. He's one of Belgium's (and probably Europe's) best figurine sculpturers around, and he 's fond of "steampunk" design. Lately, we 've been talking about making scales.

I can't comment on my ideal razor yet, still haven't figured out what I like best of the 4/8" to 10/8" range, and whether it would have to be a wedge, a full hollow, or something in between.

I've heard the name Jules Verne before, isn't he a famous writer about world/sea/space/timetraveling?

I never heard of the term 'steampunk' before so I did a quick image seach. I like that style, it made me think of the movie 'La cité des enfants perdu' (The city of the lost children)
from director Jean-Pierre Jeunet which was probably inspired by the style.
I am a big fan of the Art Nouveau style, all those organic shapes and swirls, absolutely wonderful. And Belgium being the Art Nouveau center of the world there's a lot to be inspired by.
My dream is to build my own Art Nouveau house one day with the entire interior and all its furniture..and sure there is some room for some 'steampunk' design

Yes, could be fun to have a rendez-vous some day to brainstorm about scale making and have an real Belgium beer (provided you drink 'm of course)
I didn't knew you had your own wood shop, are you a hobbyist of a professional woodworker?

A few months ago a when to a fine wood supply store in the east of Holland to get me some nice Purple Heart and Padoek wood to make some scales but my first attempt failed (lack of skill, tools and material knowledge).
