Thread: Did I get a good deal?

I saw these two razors in an antique shope today and bought them--I got them for $20 a piece. the first is a Shumate "trusty." there is a small amount of pitting and a few water marks on the blade but the scales are in great shape. The edge is also in good shape and shaved the hair off of my arm with no problem.
the second is a Wade&Butcher "Barbers Choice." the blade has a little more rusting and pitting than the shumate, but Barbers Choice is etched into the blade. It also has a great edge and shaved my arm hair with no problem. Anyway, I am out a total of $40 on both of these razors and any comments on whether or not I got screwed would be helpful. Sorry that these pictures are not great--they are from my cell phone.

Shumates are good shavers. I'd say the W&B was the best buy of the two.

From what I can see…

You did good for 40 bux... the Shumate with the covered scales looks like a great shaver/collectable piece. The W&B may need some work but should be a great shaver…

Thanks for the feedback-I have a proposition for anyone that is interested (maybe this would be better in B/S/T). I don't have time to restore any razors-not to mention the fact that I really don't know how to do it. I really like the W&B (the weight is good in my hand and I like the larger blade). If anyone would be interested in restoring the W&B for me (nothing fancy, just cleaning the blade up good) I will give you the Shumate for free. If anyone is interested just let me know. -Charles

Well that sounds like a great proposition considering that I collect Shumates and am an avid restorer PM sent....

I am a noob and know jack, but you've inspired me to make a special trip into the small town around my grandparent's cottage to check out their antique store. Lots of interesting things turn up in there, but somehow I never manage to fit in the time. This time I will! (The town is settled in a very old farming community, with lots of elderly residents. The antique store is usually bursting at the seams.)
