    Default What have I got here . . .

    Hi,

I'm new to SRP and would like some help identifying this razor. I found it among some antiques that my wife had from her family. It could have been one of her dad's or her favorite uncle.

The razor has imprinted on it: 33 then E. BANGERT GARANTIE EGER SOLINGEN

On the the other side of the razor is what looks like eagle's wings. These may not show in the pix.

It seems to have a bakelite handle on it.

I have not cleaned it up yet and won't until I know what it is and what I will do with it.

The case was unable to be photgraphed without special lighting. It is all black even the lettering on it which says :Emil Bangert, Eger 1/Bonmen and under that appears: Fabriks-Neiderlage Solinger Stahlwaren And on the cap end of the case appears:Garantie

Here are some pix of the razor

What look like rust on this razor is some reflection. While there is no rust on the razor it looks like there maybe some pitting and other imperfections.

I am not a straight razor user (for now anyway) but I am interested to know if the razor has any value and can be cleaned up. My intentions are to try and restore it and find someone near me (perhaps a retired barber) to sharpen it. Then who knows I may try it myself or come back to SRP and offer it very, very inexpensively to some one here who would appreciate it for what it is an old straight razor.

    Thanks for your help

Very nice find. If you aren't into the clean-up and you have no intention of keeping her I will do you a favor and take her off your hands for no charge.

    Icedog,

You have helped me answer one question, does the razor have any value. It does to you if only as a razor to practice your restoration skills or as a shaver rather than a display piece.

For now I do want to clean it up and give it a test drive or three before I decide what to do with it. Keep it or pass it on to some newbie to straight razor shaving.

Can you help me with the identifying of the razor. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

It's German, from a well known razor producing area. It's a dreadnaught style shape. The scales are probably horn. It has been honed many times looking at the hone wear on the back. It is not worth a great deal of money.
It would be nice to get honed up and shave with.
I'm only a learner myself but I think what I have told you is about right.

Can't see them named on this handy list of german makers and their marks. Their was an awful lot of makers in and around Solingen - Eger being on the outskirts.
