    Default Bought Fanger on EBay

I just received a Fanger that I found on Ebay last week. I have been honing without success. I have used the pyramid method with 4,000/8,000 Norton and polished with Belgian yellow coticule. I did the pyramid starting, with 25, and finished up. Test shaved and the razor glided over my beard, as if there was a wire built up. There wasn't, so did the pyramid again. Same results.

If anyone has an idea about why this may be happening, please let me know. Have honed others that shave just fine.

    Thanks!

Welcome to SRP. Do you have an eye loupe or some other form of magnification with which to examine the bevel ? Generally the foundation is the bevel setting so you might go back to square one and start with that. Then do a 15/5, 10/5. and so on and see where it gets you.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Like Jimmy said it is probably that your bevel is not set good. Will the razor shave arm hair? If not you might need to look into getting a 1000 grit hone and reset the bevel. You can reset the bevel on the 4000 stone it just takes a long time. If your bevel is not properly set all you are doing is polishing a dull edge. For me when I get a proper bevel on my 1000 grit hone the razor will easily shave arm hair for the entire length of the blade. Only then do I move on to the 4/8 for further polishing of the edge.

Hope this helps and good luck

Default Thanks to all for your input on Fangor!

Really appreciate all the help, you guys are the best!

To answer a few questions brought up:

I do have a loop and did see some very fine corrosion on the bevel.
The razor will shave arm hair although not real smooth.

I believe that I do need to set a new bevel, just need to pick up a 1,000 grit stone.

Thanks again to all. After I work on the razor, I will post a picture, and let you know how it went.

    All the best,
    Rick

I found the same razor as The Limp, but this razor is in a very good shape, I think. I found it on one Croatian web page. I'll go buy this razor next week. Only 37 USD.
