Thread: Thiers Issard Info Please?

Take a look at my newest razor. It is made by a French company named Thiers Issard. Does anyone know anything about them? They appear to be connected with the Sabatier cutlery manfacturer because the box has the Sabatier elephant on it. But more mysterious is the engraving on this apparently brand new special editon razor:

You may not believe I found this crazy thing while on vacation in Maine. I don't believe it myself!

The blade and handle are both engraved with the words Straight Razor Place". The blade also sports the sgnature of Lynn Abrams! This razor is serialized with number 171. It came in the original box with a fancy leather sheath. Does anyone know hw many of these things there are and where they are sold?

It took alot of time and all my charm to convince the woman to sell me this razor. She said they are very rare and came directly from France strictly for members of SRP! What are the odds of me, a member of Straight Razor Place finding the only one available at a flea market in rural New England! Well, it was like pulling teeth but I got it. Now here's the big question. I have no idea how much these things are worth. I realize something is basically worth what someone is willing to pay. However, this is pretty special and I can find nothing about them. If I told you I talked the crazy woman into letting me have the razor for $35, a set of four hubcaps off a 1964 Austin Healey Sprite Mark II and an issue of Mad Magazine from May 1958 in near mint condition, would you think I got a good deal?

You ripped her off!! Sprites didn't have hubcaps.

I can only guess that your Mad Magazine Collection is going to suffer, why without that issue you might as well use the rest as toilet tissue.

It doesn't say "Thiers Issard" It says "This is a razor duh". The etching must have been worn down by the sands of time...

The Trac LXXVI Razor from Mad Magazine
Back when the 5-bladed Gillette Fusion came out a bunch of readers wrote in about the Onion's prescient spoof article about a ridiculous sounding 5-bladed razor. Recently ShavingStuff reader Crosius wrote in about an earlier piece from seminal comedy rag Mad Magazine (and presented by Wired). Seems Al Jaffee and his gang of misfits dreamed up the Trac LXXVI (that's 76 for all you roman numeral fans) razor years before:

Seventy-six cutting edges … wrap around an entire face and shave it close and clean in two or three effortless moves.

That was in response to the Schick Quattro, which at the time had an outlandish 4 blades.
For the M3Power, the first vibrating power razor from Gillette, Mad came up with a

battery-powered shaver produces "a high-frequency electromagnetic ray [that] instantly withers hairs and reduces them to ash."

Now this is some funny stuff! In case you missed it in the link above.

I suggest you all go back and watch the first episode of Saturday Night Live, when they spoofed the first multi-bladed razors and suggested a razor with five blades. :P

Yes, it's unavailable, so I'll tell you what I remember:
This was a limited edition run through classicshaving and indeed the razors were made bu Thiers-Issard, who is owned by Sabatier.
IIRC there are 250 of them, to order you had to give your srp name to classicshaving (with enough determination I'm certain you can find who the original owner was). Lynn owns #1, as everybody who has seen his DVD can confirm
What it's worth - well the price was changing with time, so let's just say they were mid-priced TI.

Reported to shave very nicely (yeah I don't own one).
