    Default Old Razor Appraisal

To start with, same tired story, been shaving with a DE razor for a while and want to start using a straight.
I found a very old straight that belonged to the previous owner of my parent's first house.
I know I need to start with something shave-ready but I'm wondering if I would be better off getting this honed by a honemeister or just getting a used shave ready from someone else and maybe using this to practice honing myself.
I'm guessing if this razor is decent I should get it honed and use that, if it's junk I might as well start with some good steel.
It appears very sharp still (catches on a thumbprint) but has rust spots even on the edge in a few spots. The case reads H.BOKER&CC'S UNRIVALED RAZORmade in germany with the razor itself reads MANUFACTURED BY W.GREAVES&SON SHEATWORKS the blade looks like just a hair under 7/8 square tip.
Does anyone know anything about this blade? Is it work anything or should i just get a new one and use this as practice?
    Thanks
    Mike

I would definitely send the blade to a honemeister, if only to get a benchmark for what it should feel like for future reference.

After some discussion on #srp, Greaves are now also to be found in Good Straight Razor Brands - Straight Razor Place Wiki

+1 on that advise. Have it honed by someone that knows how to do it right,,,then you can have a measure to go with in the future.

Greaves and sons sheafworks are generally superb pieces of Sheffield history and are very nice smooth shavers... since it has some rust you might want to consult wit ha restorer to get is all set to go.

I've seen some pretty greaves come out of travelers shop. he really like the big Sheffield blades.
    Be just and fear not.
