Default So confused where to start

So, I was planning on getting my boyfriend a straight razor for Christmas (he has a lot of problems with razor burn and loves getting a professional straight razor shave) BUT I didn't realize how complicated it is. I understand there are only a few brands of new razors to buy (I think I should get a new one for him??) but what size? Where would I look for a shop I can ask questions at? I am in Seattle and have looked online but there's so much info I just don't know where to start! I'd liked to spend around $200 for all he needs to get started...any info would be appreciated. Thanks!!

I agree that you should contact any of the online vendors mentioned. They can help you along. You're unlikely to find accurate info at a brick and mortar store. Most of them specialize in knives, cigars, etc, and really don't know much about straights. As for size, a 5/8 or 6/8 is pretty standard and would be a good place to start. Don't let anyone tell you the razor will be shave ready from the factory! Get the sharpening service. Oh, and I would strongly suggest you get a copy of Lynn's DVD "The World of Straight Razors". For less than $20 is offers three hours of all the info you could want on straights and how to go about getting on.
