Thread: Protective oil

Hi gents,

Just wondering what kind of protective oil can I use on my razor, something I can get hold of easy that works good. Also, when should I use it..I've seen some who say after every shave and some who say only when you don't use the razor for over 1 month..but I use my razor frequently

I use Camilla oil, which is also called tsuba or tea seed oil. This is a natural product which has been used on blades for centuries in Japan. Many people use a variety of oils made for guns and such, but I for one feel better about having something edible on my bkades, and potentially in any accidental cuts!

I have been using WD-40 sprayed on a piece of TP to wipe down my blades after each use for 2 years now with no adverse effects...

The only type of scales I have not used this with are the unfinished wood styles.... Like wood with just oil or wax rubbed on them....

I use some mineral oil that I got with my braun electric a couple of years ago.

I use the oil that came with my beard trimmer, I actually got a big bottle in Wal Mart. It's Wahl, not sure what kind of oil it is, but it's good for clipper blades, it must be ok for razors. On this subject, I have about 20 blades in rotation, what do you guys think about oiling them. Right now, I don't. They sit out on a marble tile on my bathroom counter. After I use it, I clean it, leave it open on a paper towel to dry while I get dressed. Before I leave, I close her up, and put her back in the rotation.
I don't want rust to build, especially on my vintage blades...Any thoughts?

I used the Wahl oil until it ran out, I believe that it is just like sewing machine oil which I know one of the guys here uses and he likes it.. I was thinking of changing to that also, but I use the WD-40 to remove the black gunk from taping the spines so it serves me for two purposes...

I had the same question and went with the mineral oil. It is a natural oil that can be ingested in the body that seemed a little better for me since i am new and, well not to good with the blade yet (got a nice cut this morn) It just seemed that if there was still a little wd-40 left on the blade i would rather not cut it into my face. Which this is just my opinion!

I use food grade mineral oil. I used to use Camellia oil, but it left a sticky film after a couple months of storage.

I've only been using mineral oil on the razors I don't plan on using for a month or more.

That Camille oil seems quite hard to get. About the mineral oil..can you be more specific of what kind of oil it is as motor oil also have "mineral oil". The sewing machine oil seems to be the easiest to obtain..also I know what it is.

But I dont know it doesn't seem like I need it if it's just for storage as I only have 2 razors that I take in turns and I shave 2-3 times per week. But even so won't I need to be worried about rust etc.?

If you use the same 2 razors you probably don't need to worry about any visible rust on the blade however microscopic rust will form and there really isn't much you can do about it. Probably an oiled blade will develop it also since its doubtful you could get the oil into all the nooks and crannies at the very edge. However stropping should take care of that.
