I just purchased a vintage John Cockhill smiling razor with Sheffield steel. First sheffield I have owned. The razor edge was the sharpest I have seen on any of my razors vintage or modern. The shave was smooth as silk. I really was wondering why the difference and you guys have made my day. Under a 300 power scope the bevelName: s-l500.jpg

Well I have to reply to this. I wasn't a firm believer in the steel from Sheffield until today. I had never shaved with a Sheffield blade before today, and only took into consideration the opinions of others.

I have to say today was one of the smoothest shaves that I have ever had. The razor was professionally honed by my good friend Outback. Now I can truthfully say that Sheffield steel is truly remarkable. One of my favorite razors (Robeson 2525) is as smooth as can be but that Wade & Butcher hollow ground topped it today. Very nice indeed....

Sorry to burst any bubbles here but yup Sheffield steel was often made with Swedish iron ore.

Yes, Hirlau, yes, and I'd like to add, with most exultant joy, this:

Oh I think he agree's, and then there is Wolfpack, who lives in both worlds, first the Sheffield goes on the Coti, then onto the Escher, and the result is sublime Sheffield steel.....makes my darn knobby knees knock together thinking about it....
