Thread: Please recommend a DOVO

I've started with a cheap $55 Dovo "Best Value" for these reasons:
0. It is a solid performer, a de-facto standard. I had it honed by Howard, it is my benchmark blade.
1. I will not be too disappointed if I accidentally drop it, chip it, damage it, loose it (i.e. in a poker game.
2. I needed to figure out what would work for me before spending some serious money on fancy stuff.
#2 is no longer valid for me but #0 and #1 still are.

Thanked: 335Beamish,
I'm glad you asked me. There are many fine DOVO razors and among them are the Bismarcks and the Ebenholzs. The Bismarck has a shoulderless grind which I think is the cat's nightie, but the decorated and faceted spine leaves me a bit cold. The Ebenholz is a 5/8 which is one notch too small for my preferences. That leaves us with... (and the room turns quiet as the audience is hanging on my every word) the DOVO Special 6/8 with fake tortise scales. It just happens to be one of my favorites and will always stay in the rotation. It hones to a very nice edge, shaves like a dream, and looks really nice with those eye catching scales.
And there you have it. And what do those other guys know???

This should complement your research.

As I learned, the problem with your question is that there are not too many people that own all the razors in the list. ;-)
Al raz.

Thanked: 0They are all beautiful but I think I would go for the ebony, which I want to, which brings me to my question:
Is there another site selling these, which ships internationally?

Thanked: 0and I immediately found classic shaving. At first sight the price difference seemed too much, but for whatever reason the spike point (which is what I want) is cheaper than the round point, while it's the other way round at vintage blades. So different questions are in order:
1. How is the "presharpening" of classic shaving reputed?
2. How likely is it that I will butcher my face with the spike point with no prior experience (that is with that type of point, not with straight razors in general)

Thanked: 16If you gotta choose....
I'd say go with the Bismark. I just picked up the Bergischer Lowe from Vintage, and I really like it.
I'm becoming a fan of Dovos; I really like the way they look.
