As mentioned above the gold is very thin and it is the steel below rusting in spots where the gold was removed. I know folks on here have done some great replating of razor tangs with fresh gold but this is an investment in equipment....

If I get a razor like that I take 000 steel wool and a lubricant like Break Free or WD40 and wet the blade and take off as much of the rust as I can by lightly going over it with the wool.

If I do use sandpaper it would be a high grit like 1000 to take off the surface stuff without leaving deep scratches. I would leave the pitting. Maybe hit it with Mass or Flitz afterwards.

Hand sanding through progressive grits is hours and hours of work and not my cup of tea. The shave is the thing for me and I can shave with a pitted razor as long as the pitting isn't in the bevel. If it is the razor may be junk if the pitting is too deep to hone through.

I have gotten razors like that early on when I had RAD badly. I have become more discriminating as time has gone on and I would pass on a blade that needed a lot of work or send it out to be restored if I valued the brand.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I agree I too have learned to stay away from these they usaly end in heart ache! Almost all rust has some pitting and any at all is deeper than the gold. I lost the gold on a King Cutter not long ago but it looked like sh.... anyway atleast now its a nice blade with etching. Im done with gold unless it mint!

If you are going to write off the gold wash maybe you can try this http://straightrazorpalace.com/works...l-potatos.html and let us know how it works. It may keep the gold wash, then again anything can happen.
