    Default Can this be saved?

This is on a local ebay equivalent. I want to buy it if the gold can be cleaned (that can't be rust right? or it's not real gold?) I don't care to save the etching. I have never done any restoration work before.
Also an identification would be appreciated.
    What do you think?

I'll let the serious resto guys weigh in , but my guess is that you won't get to keep the gold. The gold is thinly plated on top of the steel so the rust is probably going down to the steel below. You'll lose some of it when you sand it down.

You could buff the rust off, and the gold wash would come with it. For that I just use a dremel with the little felt wheel, which I load up with chromium oxide in brick form.

The only thing that concerns me is the rust right on the edge/bevel. I can't really tell by the picture, but I hope there isn't must rust right on the edge, because that can be a little more troublesome.

What kind of tools do you have for cleaning up razors? You could always use fine sandpaper to buff out the rust, or maybe even a really fine steel wool.

I can't help you with the identification though, sorry. Hopefully others will come on to help you identify it.

I have no tools, this will be a first attempt if I get it. I'll just get some sandpaper and go as suggested in the wiki.

Good idea. Keep at it and I'm sure it'll look great!

There's a lot of info in the workshop section. What does the writing say on the blade?

Nothing mentioned by the seller or visible in the photo.

Oh, sorry, I thought you already had it and had posted a picture. It depends on how deep the rust goes. I couldn't tell you what kind of razor it is. Solingen doesn't narrow down the field enough for me to venture a guess.
