Default Anyone familiar with Sheffield Admirals...

Hi All, Im new here.. glad i found this place. Been trying to research several straight razors i found in Gdad's attic. One in paticular is a Sheffield -The Admirals- . It looks almost like it was hand carved? Has a carving of a lady on handle and the blade has pic's of three Admirals? Does anyone know how old or rare this may be? Or how much it may be worth? Thank you, in advance for any info you can give.

While I'm not familiar with that particular razor, I can give you a few generalizations and observations...

    1. Sheffield razors are highly regarded

    2. Razors with nude lady scales in general get higher prices on ebay.

    3. The condition of the razor over all will greatly effect it's value. Unfortunately, that's hard to see from the pictures you have posted.

A few months ago, I saw a nude lady scaled piece of junk razor go for about a hundred bucks just because of the scales... you probably already know this, but just in case... "Scales" are the "handles".

As FloorPizza said the handles, we refer to them as scales, on that razor are worth a lot regardless of the blade. That is assuming that there are no cracks, chips or rot in the scales. If you put it on ebay post good photos of the razor on both sides with the blade showing. State the condition of the blade and scales in your description to avoid answering a lot of questions later.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Default Do you think i should...

Do you think i should try to polish the blade before selling it? It looks a bit tarnished...but not as bad as it appears in the pic's. Also, thank you for replying to my post! You really helped!! im such a novice.

I would advise against trying to polish it, or clean any part of the razor in any way. The chances are just too great that you would cause more harm than good. Guys that are in to this hobby in a big way pay big, big bucks to have a razor "cleaned and restored", and for good reason: it ain't easy.

Collectors look passed the dirt and rust. If it were my blade, I'd just take a bunch of very good, high resolution close ups of it, then post it on ebay.

    Default first things first....

I also have this dubl duck satin wedge that i'm more comfortable parting with first . I would like to sell it but have absolutely no clue of it's value. Is anyone familiar w/ this straight ?It's in good condition, no chips or cracks. If so, what would be an ideal price range ? Floorpizza..? you've been very helpful...

Your Grandad had good taste in razors. I, as do many others, collect Dubl Ducks. Dubl Duck razors are also highly regarded, as are the Shefields....
With the duck, it really depends on the conditon of the blade itself, nicks, chips, pitting, rust, also are the scales in good condition, is the blade tight etc...

Like Zib said, the Dubl Ducks are very highly prized right now. For some reason, they have seen a huge price jump on ebay in just the last couple of months. Back in September, you could get a duck in good condition for about thirty bucks. Recently, they've all gone for alot more than that. With prices *that* unstable, it's about impossible to say, "well, you're looking at a price range from x to y on your blade."

You can do a search on ebay for completed Dubl Duck auctions and have a look for yourself at recent prices. Try and find one that compares to your blade to get some sort of idea about what you can expect.

    No. Definitely not.
Unless you know what you are doing, you risk damaging the blade, and ruining the scales. With a very high degree of probability, I can say that you will make things worse.

Also, please remember that SRP is not a razor evaluation site.
You've asked about the value of a razor a couple of times, but that discussion is off-topic.
If you want to know the value of a razor, sell it on ebay. The value is what it earns.

If you want to know a price without selling, find someone to appraise it for you. But even then, a razor in bad condition but with interesting scales... there is no way to know without selling.
