My New RayG-style Lightbox
Saw the great setup from Ray and thought, damn- I have a Nikkor 1.8 50mm. I should be taking pics like that. Then I remembered- he's actually a good photographer, but you got to start somewhere, right?
So here's my Shave Den/ Photo Studio and a couple of pics inspired by the man.
Thanks Ray, for great tips and inspirational photos!
Taken with a Nikon D70s, btw.

Thanked: 278Nice. I need to dig out my real photo gear instead of snapping away with my compact camera.
Looks like you have protective filters on the lenses, good idea when putting them close to the razor.
Took me a while to work out what that thing on top of the tube of Nomad was, but I got there in the end!

Great job. Those sample pictures look fantastic.
I really need to do a lightbox. The flashes just aren't compensating.
This is what I've been using:

Damn, Bjorn! That's a serious setup! I just need to figure out how to do my flash remotely and I can suspend it over the top of the light box.

Thanked: 278I have one of those fold-out studios, I got mine for about £10. It comes with a blue/grey double sided cloth that attaches by velcro, but there's no easy way to store it without it getting creased/folded. A sheet of A3 paper does the job better really.

I need to build a light box, I had one that I made for someone else at the last SE Gathering. I have been using two alien bees b400:
I have a shoot through umbrella for one and a silver bounce umbrella for the other, but I just aim them at the side and top of the light box (when I am using one) with no other diffusion. I trigger them with a radio transmitter from the same company. Here is my run around camera:
And the studio camera:
The hassi stays tethered to a PC in the studio because it makes me nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs to think about carrying it around. The H2D body is a third the cost of the digital back that is on it. Buying the CF-39 was like buying a decent mid-size car brand new.

Thanked: 41Tyler, what material are you using to make the walls of your box? Not the frame but the white stuff. Nice pics. You have inspired me to get to work on a box.

I just stopped by a fabric store on the way to Home Depot and walked around like a fish out of water until I found some white fabric that had the right balance of translucence/opacity. It cost me $3 with plenty of fabric left over. I figured fabric would be better than the tissue paper Ray had used only because if it got dirty or creased, it could be easily fixed rather than tossing it and starting over. I may have gone a little
too opaque on it though- it does a great job of diffusing, but I think I may be blocking more light than I had intended.
