    Default Cheap Rescaling?

I was wondering how much it would cost to rescale and possibly hone a razor on the cheap. I would be able to send wood with the razor if that would make it any cheaper. What is the cheapest rescaling material typically? If send your own wood is an option I was thinking curly maple (flamed maple) or purple heart maybe...
Nothing fancy, just I am playing with the idea of buying ebay razors with good blades and having them rescaled bare bones- cheapest decent pins, cheapest decent scales...

Why not re-scale, and hone yourself?

Prices on rescaling can really be all over the place... the cheapest and quickest scales would probably be out of some kind of micarta (can be found at knife making supply stores for around 12$ a sheet or so) and pinning material is pretty negligible as far as cost goes... there are plenty of guys that could do a rescale here on SRP... check out the classifieds and the workshop/gallery posts and maybe you can find someone who you could ask to make you some.

Do you have a particular razor in mind? if so, do you have any pictures?

For a few reasons. First, I am new to straight shaving. Even if I weren't, I wouldn't have a clue where to start. Second, I am in college... thus... I don't have the tools, I don't have the time, and I don't have the money. I know that seems liek an oxymoron, but it could be cheaper to get a fritz bracht with a broken scale and rescale it than to buy a good fritz bracht. I'm just inquiring at this stage for that reason.

Its an old twin duck with a good edge, scales are dinged up though, with a crack near the hinge.

Your razor looks to be in fairly good condition. The edge looks straight and the spine looks even. Why not just get it honed and shave ready and use it until you can afford to move up a notch. Better than buying an expensive razor and finding you don't enjoy shaving with a straight. You would only need a strop to put you in business.

    Regards - Walt

Classic Shaving sells replacement scales at what look, to me, to be very reasonable prices: Straight Razor Maintenance & Repair Needs. As low as $10.99.

Seems like it shouldn't be too hard to knock out the pivot pin and replace the scales, which come with new pin hardware. Now, I don't know how to do this myself, but maybe someone here with some experience can tell us how.

Those TI faux Tortoise shell scales, for $12.99, look to be a super value!

Hey, I have an eBay razor with busted scales in the mail and I am a student -- School of Hard Knocks, that is!

Actually, that's how I knew about the Classic Shaving scales. I've started to look for a way to fix up my forthcoming razor.
